Our Commitment to Accessibility

ChordProgressionMaker.com is committed to making its content and tools as accessible as possible to all users, including people with disabilities. Emily Sanders designs and maintains this site with accessibility as a baseline requirement, not a secondary concern.

This statement documents the current conformance level of ChordProgressionMaker.com, what has been implemented to support accessible use, what known limitations exist, and how to report accessibility problems.

Conformance Status

ChordProgressionMaker.com is substantially conformant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA.

Substantially conformant means the vast majority of site content and functionality meets WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards. Unlike audio-dependent tools, the Chord Progression Maker is a pure typed-input and text-output tool — no microphone, no audio file, no hearing required to use it fully. This means ChordProgressionMaker.com achieves a higher level of accessibility than tools with audio dependencies, and the primary tool is fully usable by deaf and hard-of-hearing users.

Known limitations are minor and documented in the Known Limitations section below.

What We Have Implemented

Keyboard Navigation All interactive elements on this site — buttons, links, form fields, dropdown menus, and the chord generation controls — are fully operable via keyboard alone. Tab order follows a logical reading sequence. No keyboard traps exist anywhere on the site. Users can generate chord progressions, read results, and navigate the entire site without a mouse or touchscreen.

Colour Contrast All text content meets the WCAG 2.1 Level AA minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. Contrast ratios have been verified using the WebAIM Contrast Checker against all foreground and background colour combinations used on the site, including chord result displays and Roman numeral labels.

Alternative Text All meaningful images on ChordProgressionMaker.com include descriptive alt text. Decorative images use empty alt attributes (alt="") so screen readers skip them without generating redundant announcements.

Skip Navigation Link A skip-to-main-content link is present at the top of every page, allowing keyboard and screen reader users to bypass the site header and navigation and move directly to the main page content.

Responsive Design All pages are fully responsive and function correctly at viewport widths from 320 px upward. Text does not overflow its container at any standard zoom level. Interactive elements remain operable at mobile screen sizes. No content requires horizontal scrolling at standard zoom levels.

No Autoplay Audio or Video No audio or video content on ChordProgressionMaker.com plays automatically. The tool produces text output only — chord names, Roman numerals, and functional labels. There is no audio playback component on any page.

Readable Typography Body text is set in a legible sans-serif typeface at a base size of at least 16 px. Line spacing meets the WCAG 1.4.12 Text Spacing requirement. Users can increase text size up to 200% using browser zoom without loss of content or functionality.

Focus Indicators Visible focus indicators are present on all interactive elements. Users navigating by keyboard can always see which element is currently in focus.

Form Labels All form fields — including the chord generation inputs, dropdown selectors, and the contact form — have programmatically associated labels. No placeholder text is used as a substitute for a visible label.

Screen Reader Compatible Output All chord progression results — chord names, Roman numeral labels, quality descriptions, and functional role annotations — are rendered as standard HTML text, fully readable by screen readers. There are no canvas elements, SVG-only outputs, or image-based results that would exclude screen reader users.

Fully Accessible Features

Because ChordProgressionMaker.com involves no audio dependency, all features of the primary tool are fully accessible:

  • The chord generation interface — fully keyboard and screen reader operable
  • All chord progression results — displayed as standard readable text
  • Roman numeral labels and functional role annotations — fully readable by screen readers
  • All educational articles, explainers, and the FAQ
  • The How It Works page
  • All legal pages
  • The Contact page and contact form

Deaf and hard-of-hearing users can use every feature of this site without accommodation — there is no audio component that creates a barrier.

Known Limitations

Complex chord notation display Some chord notations — particularly those using accidentals (sharps, flats), superscript degree symbols (°), and half-diminished symbols (ø) — may be rendered inconsistently across screen readers depending on the screen reader version and browser combination. Emily Sanders monitors known screen reader rendering issues with music notation symbols and updates markup as browser and screen reader support evolves.

Dropdown interaction on older assistive technology The key and progression style dropdowns use standard HTML <select> elements, which are supported by all major screen readers. On older or less common assistive technology combinations, dropdown interaction may require additional keystrokes. This is flagged as a known issue and users experiencing difficulty are encouraged to report it.

Testing and Verification

Accessibility testing on ChordProgressionMaker.com has been conducted using the following combinations:

  • NVDA + Chrome on Windows 11 — full keyboard navigation, chord generation, screen reader announcement of results including Roman numeral labels
  • VoiceOver + Safari on macOS — keyboard navigation, chord generation, screen reader announcement and focus management
  • VoiceOver + Safari on iOS — touch navigation, dropdown interaction, screen reader announcement of results on mobile

Testing is reviewed annually and after any significant site update. The most recent accessibility review was completed in June 2026.
